The “last mile” and e-cargo

Last mile delivery acts as a bridge between the pharmacy and its customers

How can drugs be delivered to patients promptly and safely – without losing sight of scarce resources? A courier service via e-Cargo combined with thoughtful planning right from pre-order to delivery can offer the key to success in this case. The introduction of the e-prescription also enables prescriptions to be delivered without patients having to visit the pharmacy beforehand.

Intelligent planning as the key to success!

The courier service will play an even more important role with the introduction of the e-prescription. Route optimization is the most important factor in cost-efficiency – especially in the branch network.

The process at a glance

A shift in pharmacy purchasing to pickup and courier services is expected to occur with the introduction of electronic prescriptions. The electronic transmission of prescriptions enables consultation and dispensing without the patient having to enter the pharmacy.

1. Order and payment processing

A webshop receives non-prescription, over-the-counter and prescription orders (e-prescription). Electronic payments can then be made in the webshop and a link to the pharmacy inventory management system made available.

2. Consulting

Consultation takes place remotely by telephone, chat or video conference. This is a mandatory part of the process flow.

3. Order processing

The pharmacy’s Micro Fulfillment Center or the pharmacy staff processes orders for the courier service (last-mile delivery service) and picks them for delivery.

4. Route optimization

The orders are route-optimized for the last-mile delivery service and distributed to the individual vehicles. Tracking and delivery information will be provided to the person who placed the order.

5. Last mile

The courier can reach the city center quickly on an e-Cargo bike, actively helping to protect the environment against congested roads, noise and particulate matter.

6. Delivery

The courier delivers the order (last-mile delivery service). Acceptance delays on the part of patients can be actively transferred to ApoTune Drive and the route can be adjusted to deliver all items on the same day where possible.
