THE CHALLENGE

Murray Pharmacy in East Kilbride, Scotland was established in 1960 and now serves a population of 75,000 residents. In an area that is continually growing, Murray Pharmacy wanted to be able to adapt and move with the times.

The recent extension of Core Services through the Pharmacy First Initiative, the owners Sanjay and Anish Majhu, wanted to discover the options available to them to help reduce the burden on GP Practices. Their pharmacy had started to get busier, it didn’t have enough qualified staff and they realised a large amount of time was being taken up with managing stock and labelling.

THE SOLUTION

Sanjay decided automation gave him the solution he was looking for. Using a dispensing robot would free up his time by helping manage his stock, providing him with reports for monitoring stock levels and will always select the product nearest to expiry.

Another bonus that Sanjay didn’t expect was the need to have less stock on the shelves. Reducing the number of shelves in the retail space has given him additional room to create a consulting area and provide space for customers to move around so that they could feel at ease.

KEY FACTS

• Reducing workload for staff by 30%.
• £8.5k saving on stock holding was identified in the first two months. This is stock that is comprised of high and low turnaround stock as well as unused and short-dated stock.
• Low turnaround stock and short-dated stock were redistributed to other Murray Pharmacies, reducing costs and further wastage.
• Creating a happier working environment by reducing time pressures.
• Reducing the need for shelving created extra space for a consulting room.
